Worried about making it through the winter in good health? Can’t figure out what to do with all those garden/farmers market veggies and fruit? Want to learn about or use herbs in new ways? This series is for you!
In this time of COVID, everyone is trying to figure out how to stay healthy and avoid microbes, and do it on a budget, while being busier than ever. Come learn to make simple foods that are nutrient-dense and packed with extra health benefits, don’t take a lot of time, and are affordable. In this series we will be focusing on fermented and pickled foods and beverages that include vitamin- and mineral-rich, healing herbs so you get your food and (preventive) medicine rolled into one!

Herbed Smoothies for Extra Wellness
Everybody loves smoothies! They’re hugely popular right now, and why not make smoothies that not only taste good but have health- and immunity-enhancing benefits? We will talk about basic smoothie-making (Iris started making them 46 years ago!), make an herbal smoothie, and learn about the herbs that can be easily and affordably added to your shakes and smoothies for a tasty alternative to your herbal medicine routine.. What an easy way to get you and your family to eat healthy! We will maintain social distance and masks must be worn. Handouts and all materials included in the cost of the class. Limit: 4

Sleepy Beats: Root Veggies and Herbs for Sleep
Lots of people, kids and adults, are having problems with sleep these days. Herbs offer an easy, natural way to help relax and bring on restful sleep, safely and without nasty side-effects. Pickling root veggies (beets, carrots, parsnips) with sleep-promoting herbs is a simple, tasty way to get the benefits of those herbs and the nutrition and yumminess of beets, etc. We’ll make a batch of Sleepy Beets (you will take home a small jar) and discuss the herbs that are helpful for sleep and safe for all ages. Beyond Dill: Pickling with Herbs
We all have heard of dill pickles but what about Rosemary-Thyme or Fennel pickles!? Pickling with a vinegar brine is quick and easy, and a prime opportunity to effortlessly add herbs to promote health, improve digestion, and aid immunity into your diet. We will make a batch of herbed pickles (you will take home a small jar) and discuss the choices of healthy and tasty herbs that can be added to your pickles. We will maintain social distance and masks must be worn. Handouts and all materials included in the cost of the class. Limit: 4

Making Fermented Veggies, Fruits, and Sauerkraut
You have extra veggies from the farmers market or the garden, you want to add probiotics to your diet–the two meet in a beautiful and simple pairing of making fermented veggies and fruit, and, if you have lots of cabbage, sauerkraut! In this hands-on workshop you will learn the basics of lacto-fermentation (no dairy involved) and go home with a jar of fermenting veggies/fruit. This is a great way to preserve vegetables and fruits, but also can be made throughout the year with whatever veg/fruit you can find. We will maintain social distance and masks must be worn. Kombucha Plus–Herbs!
Kombucha is a fermented beverage originating in Russia, with tons of health benefits and a pleasingly sour taste. Learn to make your own with the basic ingredients of water, tea, and sugar. We’ll discuss how to do first and second ferments with fruits and/or tasty, healthy herbs for an easy, refreshing way to get your probiotics and increase your health and immunity. You will go home with a komucha scoby (mother, mushroom) which will enable you to keep making your own kombucha for months to come for practically pennies!
